The week following Christmas leading up to the New Year is all about bonding and relaxing.
Time with family, good food, and much-needed break from work helps lift spirits. But it’s also a time when many reflect and set goals for the coming year.
Sure, not everyone achieves their goal (shoutout to those who actually follow through!) as they get back into routine and fall wayward.
However, it’s always interesting to see what people hope to achieve and how location influences people’s desire.
Here’s a breakdown of the most common New Year resolutions by state.
Self-care is the top priority
Seeking therapy was the top New Year resolution for Americans. Out of 50 states, respondents in 12 said their main resolution was mental health.
This is especially true in the Northeast of the country where a cluster of states (New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania) had the same wish. In the Midwest, there was a balance with people in some states wanting to seek therapy while others focused on different goals.
Surprisingly, only people in Arizona were concerned about mental health in the Western part of the country.
To no surprise, many people want to lose weight
Following therapy, weight loss and weight training were the most common New Year resolution.
This trend can be seen mostly in the Midwestern states where people are focused on health goals and the Pacific Northwest where people want to get better sleep.
Love still seems elusive in some states
It appears finding love in California, Nevada, Utah, and a few more isn’t easy.
Or it could simply be that these states have a greater share of younger people and/or more people moving in or leaving than the rest of the country.
Improving quality of life is big in the South
People in the southern states seem not too bothered by health and social goals. Instead, they want to improve their quality of life.
Reading more, going on vacation, or improving finances are the top priorities for people in states like Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina. Only Michigan is the outlier where people said their top resolution was to go on vacation (must be the cold weather!).
