Save the Date Templates

Wedding Invitations Wording Tips

When you’re planning your wedding, you really want to craft the perfect invitation that represents both you and your future spouse. Your wedding invitations can serve as a significant introduction to both of you. It is also the first impression your guests will have of your big day so it’s essential to get the wording just right.  Not to put more pressure on you than you probably already have!

But fear not, we’re here to help with that. We’ve compiled a list of wedding invitation wording tips to guide you through the process. Whether you opt for a traditional, modern, or quirky invitation, we’ve got you covered!

1. Keep it simple, start with the basics

Your wedding invitation should be easy to read and understand. Avoid using overly complicated language or hard-to-read fonts. Stick to the basics, like who’s getting married, when and where the ceremony and reception will take place and any additional event details.

Your invitation must include some basic information, such as:

  • The hosts or request line: this is where you typically write, “Together with their families” or the names of those hosting the wedding.
  • The couple’s names
  • The date and time of the wedding
  • The venue

Here’s a simple example to illustrate this:

Together with their families

Emily Rose and James Warbler

Invite you to celebrate their union

At 4 PM

The Evergreen Estate

123 Park Lane, Anytown, Anystate

2. Use a consistent tone

The tone of your wedding invitation should match the overall theme and vibe of your wedding. If you’re planning a casual, laid-back celebration, use an informal tone in your wording.

Example: “Let’s party! Jane and John are tying the knot, and we want you there to celebrate with us!”

However, if you’re going for a more classic and elegant wedding, opt for a formal tone that conveys the importance of the occasion.

Example: “The honor of your presence is requested at the marriage of Jane Smith to John Doe.”

3. Personalize your invitations

Make it really your own. You want to look back in that memory box and see something uniquely the two of you as a couple. So don’t be afraid to inject your personality into the wording. You can do this by incorporating a favorite quote, a line from a song, or even your own unique phrasing.

Example: “Two less fish in the sea! Join us as we celebrate the love story of Jane and John.”

4. Mind the etiquette

While it’s essential to make your wedding invitations your own, there are a few etiquette rules to consider. For instance, if your parents are hosting the wedding, it’s customary to include their names on the invitation.

  • Use full names and titles: address your guests with their proper titles, and avoid using nicknames or initials. For example, “Dr. Jane Smith and Mr. John Brown.”
  • Avoid writing “and guest”: if you’re inviting a single friend with a plus one, it’s more polite to address the envelope with the guest’s full name instead.
  • Spell out numbers: when writing the date, time, or address, it’s customary to spell out all numbers. For example, instead of writing “August 8,” write “August Eighth.”

5. Consider your RSVP method

Today, there are various ways for guests to RSVP to a wedding, including via mail, phone, or online. Make sure you clearly state how you’d like your guests to respond and provide all the necessary contact information.

Example: “Kindly respond by August 1st using the enclosed RSVP card, or visit our wedding website at www.janeandjohnswedding.com.”

6. Proofread, proofread, proofread

Before sending your wedding invitations to print, double and triple-check for any errors or inconsistencies. If possible, have a friend or family member review the wording to ensure everything is accurate.

7. Remember the additional information

While the main purpose of your wedding invitation is to inform guests about your upcoming nuptials, it’s also an opportunity to provide them with any additional information they may need.

Example: “Black tie optional. Hotel accommodations are available at the Grand Hotel, mention ‘Smith-Doe Wedding’ for a discounted rate. For directions and more details, please visit our wedding website at www.janeandjohnswedding.com.”

8. Include a personal note

A great way to make your wedding invitations stand out is by adding a personal touch, such as a handwritten note or a custom illustration.

Example: “We can’t wait to celebrate our special day with you and create lasting memories! Love, Jane and John.”

By incorporating these elements, your guests will feel the warmth and thoughtfulness you’ve put into your invitations. Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all method for wording a wedding invitation. These tips and examples are simply a jumping-off point to help you create an invite that suits your unique celebration. With some planning, creativity, and attention to detail, you’ll craft an extraordinary wedding invitation that sets the stage for your big day and serves as a cherished keepsake for years to come.
