When it comes to dating, everyone has their own story to tell. One easy way to get a leg up in this market though is to understand the latest dating trends.
Dating in 2023 continues to be driven by tech-enabled solutions as dating apps and websites remain a popular method for people to meet and fall in love.
Tinder is still the most popular dating app
It’s been 10 years since Tinder popularized the concept of swiping left or right.
According to the Pew Research Center, Tinder tops the list of dating apps and/or sites used by Americans with 46% saying they have used it to find love. Not far behind is the online dating service Match at 31%, and another dating app by the name of Bumble at 28%.
Interestingly, Tinder is mostly a young person’s game. Almost 80% of people under 30 use it compared to 44% of people between 30-49. Usage falls off a cliff after age 50 as older adults are 5 times more likely to use Match over Tinder.
Work-life balance is a top dating priority
A Bumble survey found that almost half of all people looking for partners (49%) had work-life balance as a top priority and sought partners doing the same.
And who can blame them?
With our ability to stay connected constantly, quality time and meaningful interactions have become a rare and valued commodity.
Gen Z is quicker to say ‘I love you’
Unless you’re a Gen Z’er, every generation agrees 4-6 months is an appropriate timeframe to confess your love. But the first generation to grow up with the Internet thinks 1-3 months is more than enough time.
Majority of Americans think dating has gotten harder
A pre-pandemic survey by the Pew Research Center found that 47% of Americans believed dating had become harder in the past decade.
And the pandemic and isolation during lockdowns has only made it harder. Many people are still working from home which minimizes opportunities to meet people in real-life along with other lifestyle changes requiring people to adapt new dating standards.
Overuse of dating apps can cause loneliness and create feelings of dissatisfaction
You’d think that dating apps would make us feel more connected, but there’s a limit.
Multiple studies show that using dating apps more than once a day can lead to feelings of FOMO (fear of missing out) as people end up constantly comparing themselves to others.
Additionally, using dating apps too much can make it difficult to form genuine connections with people as they can encourage people to focus on superficial qualities like physical appearance.
