Introducing Beam: The Free Chart Maker

By Nadya Khoja, Feb 09, 2016

When I am writing content, either for my own blog or other marketing sites, I try to ensure that I include a decent number of statistics and credible data references in my articles. It not only shows that I’ve done my research, but it also provides my readers with a well of insightful statistics that they can use in their own writing. Part of my process includes visualizing those data points into charts using a chart maker, making it easier for readers to grasp complex information.

Most of the time I use Venngage to create my charts because I am very familiar with the tool and I can customize it to my own tastes. Not too long ago, I came across some interesting stats that I thought would make great Instagram-friendly charts, but the unfortunate part about it was that I was already on my way home, and there was no internet connection on the streetcar.

By the time I got home, I had to:

1) Reboot my computer,
2) Log into Venngage,
3) Resize the editing canvas,
4) Make my chart,
5) Customize my fonts,
6) Customize my colors,
7) Download my chart,
8) Email the chart to myself,
9) Save the image from my email to my phone,
10) And finally, upload it to Instagram.

Needless to say that a ten-step process is a bit much just to post one chart to Instagram. By the time I finally posted the picture, I had also missed the prime posting time.

If only there was a way I could quickly add my data, press a button and have a chart emailed directly to me without any additional steps…

So here’s what we did.

Well, I don’t know about you, but at Venngage, when faced with a problem, we do everything in our power to fix it. What if I told you that we fixed the problem? What if I told you that you could visualize complex data points in just a matter of seconds? What’s more, what if I told you that you could do it for absolutely no cost, without having to download any sort of complex software, and access it all from the palm of your hand?

Over the past 6 months, the Venngage team has been developing a brand new chart maker tool called Beam. I want to take this opportunity to tell you a bit more about our new product, how you can use it, and what our plans are for the future of Venngage.

What exactly does Beam do?

Simply put, Beam is an easy to use chart maker that allows you to generate a range of different chart types and styles at the click of a button.

Make different styles of charts.

The most popular styles of charts used to convey data sets are as follow.

Pie Charts

Despite its detractors, the pie chart (as well as its cousin, the donut chart) is one of the most recognizable charts today and can be easily interpreted by most people. It’s an excellent choice if you are trying to portray a percentage or composition.

Bar Charts and Column Charts

The majority of data visualization deals with comparing sets of data points. Anything that can be counted and categorized can be easily visualized using a bar or column chart. Most multiple choice survey answers can be visualized this way.

Line Charts

The most common chart to display time series data is the line chart. If you have many data points, the line chart is the most effective one to depict trends over time.

Choose from a range of color schemes.

Beam allows you to select from a range of different preset color themes, so you don’t need to worry about customizing your charts manually every time you make one.

Customize your chart with different fonts and sizes.

Because not everyone wants their charts to look exactly the same, you can change your font type, size and style to suit your own tastes.

Copy and paste your data.

Beam makes it easy to visualize your data. Simply copy and paste your statistics directly from an Excel document or a Google Spreadsheet.

iPad and mobile-friendly interface.

And of course, you can use Beam on your phone and your tablet device whenever you want and wherever you want! Send your charts directly to your email as a PNG or upload them directly to social media.

Who uses Beam?

Anyone with access to a computer, smartphone or tablet can use Beam. More specifically, the chart maker is most useful to:

Journalists and Reporters
Researchers
Designers
Marketers
Non-Profit Organizations

Educators
Students
Bloggers
