Currently, you can download free Photoshop and other software and level up your skills at a convenient tempo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like this one from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snap.com\/en-US\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image03-1-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17548\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image03-1-1.png\" alt=\"graphic design skills\" width=\"650\" height=\"226\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign are the most requested skill in our sample of job postings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like, they blew the others out of the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of the 100 job posts that I studied, 76 required Photoshop, 74 wanted Illustrator, and 74 needed InDesign. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And most wanted all three!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image15-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17552\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image15-1.png\" alt=\"graphic design skills\" width=\"650\" height=\"374\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/charts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<button class=\"btn-cta\">SHOW ME MORE CHART TEMPLATES<\/button><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need for these three graphic design skills far outpaced other popular ones by a large margin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next most popular skills were Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and HTML.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/85524296-c11e-4e2e-a8fb-5f0b5bb17495-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17546\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/85524296-c11e-4e2e-a8fb-5f0b5bb17495-1.png\" alt=\"85524296-c11e-4e2e-a8fb-5f0b5bb17495 (1)\" width=\"650\" height=\"356\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, none of those skills passed the 40% mark, which confirms our notion that Adobe skills are essential if you would like to be a designer in 2017 or beyond. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I mean way beyond 2017, Adobe has dominated this space for the past 20 or so years, and it does not look like that will be changing any time soon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, it did not matter what size company you want to work for&#8211;they followed the same trend. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which further shows that these are the cornerstone of any graphic designer&#8217;s skill set.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image07.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9577\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image07.png\" alt=\"graphic design skills\" width=\"650\" height=\"812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image07.png 1600w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image07-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image07-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image07-820x1024.png 820w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image07-730x912.png 730w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I did notice that companies with more than 1000 employees, the demand for the three Adobe programs dropped a bit. I think that can be attributed to most of the large companies assuming you already have these skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even outside sources seem to confirm our findings, with the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gdusa.com\/career\/know-what-your-design-skills-are-worth-in-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GDUSA stating that those three programs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are requested by most employers. Which is always good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you plan to become a graphic designer in the future, I would recommend learning the basics of each of them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are baseline graphic design skills and if your portfolio does not show off your skills in each, I would not even try applying.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now if you need still&nbsp;don&#8217;t have a website, check out these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.websitebuilderexpert.com\/building-websites\/how-to-make-a-resume-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website builders for designers<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Become familiar with HTML like today&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HTML was one of the most popular skills in my study of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marketing skills from earlier in the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both my data and the experts I consulted agreed that to survive in 2017 and beyond, being<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.g2crowd.com\/graphic-design-skills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> familiar with HTML is key<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/26tn33aiTi1jkl6H6\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This idea is echoed when I looked at the graphic design skills, to almost a greater extent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the marketing job posts only about 20% of the companies wanted HTML, but in design job posts, more than 30% did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image13.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9583\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image13.png\" alt=\"12 Graphic Design Skills You Need To Be Hired\" width=\"650\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image13.png 1999w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image13-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image13-768x591.png 768w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image13-1024x788.png 1024w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image13-730x562.png 730w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So almost one-third of all graphic design jobs would require you to know the basics of HTML. If not more.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now you won&#8217;t have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/products\/cms\/drag-and-drop-website-builder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">build a whole website<\/a> from scratch.&nbsp; But if you know how to make minor fixes online, it could be huge. And help your <a href=\"https:\/\/novoresume.com\/career-blog\/graphic-designer-resume\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resume<\/a> stand out.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What was a bit surprising was that the demand for HTML as a graphic design skill is not limited to only small companies and teams. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, 36% of companies with less than 1000 employees want their graphic designers to know HTML. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/charts\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9574\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image04.png\" alt=\"12 Graphic Design Skills You Need To Be Hired\" width=\"650\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image04.png 1999w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image04-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image04-768x535.png 768w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image04-1024x714.png 1024w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image04-730x509.png 730w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/charts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><button class=\"btn-cta\">SHOW ME MORE CHART TEMPLATES<\/button><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although you may never use HTML at your next job, I would still brush up on the basics for the job hunting process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the small things can really help you stand out when a hundred other applications with the same graphic design skills that pass over a hiring manager&#8217;s desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. UI\/UX design is not that popular a skill but it\u2019s worth knowing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now, if you are looking for a graphic design skill to focus on that will be worth it in the end, I would recommend UI\/UX design.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean&nbsp;Business Insider gave it one of the spots on its coveted list of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/skills-that-can-get-you-hired-2016-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top skills to have in 2017.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-20-at-10.54.32-AM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17549\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-20-at-10.54.32-AM.png\" alt=\"graphic design skills\" width=\"650\" height=\"180\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was not echoed in my research, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Only 13% of job postings wanted a graphic designer to have UI\/UX experience. It was barely in the top 20 most popular graphic design skills out of the entire study.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this was any other skill, I would say avoid learning it because the demand seems pretty low.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you want to be able to apply to these higher paying jobs, I would say you should start learning it. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because you can earn a nice chunk of extra money for having UI\/UX design on your resume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As in <strong>$7k more than average<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/9HQRIttS5C4Za\" width=\"480\" height=\"256\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I looked at the average salary for each skill, I found that those jobs that wanted UI\/UX skills had a salary of $58k!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you compare it to other popular graphic design skills based on salary, <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.envato.com\/learn\/ux-design-tutorials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UI\/UX skills<\/a> blows the others out of the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator all hovered around $51k, as well as HTML and Adobe CS. You need at least 2-3 years of experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are looking for a career pivot then maybe becoming a graphic designer immediately is not for you. Unless you already have some past experience. Because about half of all the companies that did not overtly state that they require experience were under 200 employees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So even if you only have a bit of experience, but do have a stellar portfolio, you can find a job!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are a number of online platforms that can help you get your <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.envato.com\/learn\/how-to-create-a-portfolio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">design portfolio<\/a> started. You can consider graphic design work for print on demand products such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designhill.com\/t-shirt-printing\"> t-shirt printing<\/a>, blankets and even watches. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/blog\/print-on-demand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Print on Demand<\/a>, in case you&#8217;re not familiar, is a fast-growing industry where designers partner with third-party suppliers who can print their designs on a <a href=\"http:\/\/benguonline.com\/private-label-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">white label product<\/a> when someone purchases it online.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/community.teespring.com\/blog\/how-two-design-students-built-their-successful-online-business-with-teespring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teespring<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printful.com\/blog\/the-basics-of-starting-an-online-clothing-store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Printful<\/a> allow designers to upload their own designs and <a href=\"https:\/\/millo.co\/how-to-make-money-as-an-artist\">make money<\/a> when someone purchases it from their site. Since it&#8217;s profitable, it becomes a side hustle that also develops your portfolio. The added bonus (on top of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacer.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-guide-to-passive-income\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passive income<\/a>) is that you can show prospective employers your knack for creating designs that people love.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6.
