Venngage is an <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/ai-tools\/infographic-generator\">infographic creator<\/a>. Meaning the one thing (we\u2019d better!) know how to do pretty damn well is\u2026 <i>MAKE INFOGRAPHICS.<\/i> Doy.<\/p>\n<p>We knew that we needed to build up some solid backlinks, and it had to be done in a way that represented our business. So, we decided we would offer to make free infographics (i.e. &#8220;guestographics&#8221;) for people on the subject of their choice.&nbsp;<i><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What&nbsp;are guestographics?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Guestographics are infographics you create for partner. The guestographic strategy can be highly effective method for securing mentions on high-ranking sites.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After all, who could possibly pass up the opportunity to receive a customized infographic for no charge at all?<\/p>\n<p><b>The reason we decided to take on this approach was because we needed to be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/sumome.com\/stories\/influencer-marketing-super-connector\">reach out to important influencers<\/a> with an offer they couldn\u2019t refuse<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>I had previously conducted plenty of outreach to third-tier influencers before coming to the conclusion that our strategy needed to change. I received barely any response from influencers I reached out to early on. The ones who did get back to me only did so to tell me to, and I quote, \u201cPlease go away\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Discouraged as I was, I was also determined to succeed, and I knew that offering free infographics to influencers was the key to connecting with them.<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019m going to show you how to grow your traffic and conversions like crazy with guestographics.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an exact breakdown of the steps I took to achieve the growth you see on the chart above:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Research contacts and top performing content<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Prepare the perfect pitch<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Use Buzzstream to send your pitch<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Request an outline<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Make an infographic<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Promote like crazy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In this guide, we\u2019ll go through these steps so you can replicate my process and start raking in the traffic. Let\u2019s get started.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 1: Research Contacts and Top Performing Content<\/h2>\n<p>The first step to replicate my process is to brainstorm influencers to reach out to, and research their top performing content to make an infographic out of.<\/p>\n<p>Our strategy focused on creating visual content for influencers, so the first step was to build a list of specific people that we could outreach to.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, we put together a list of various marketing sites and blogs. We created different spreadsheets for different types of companies such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Content Marketing<\/li>\n<li>SEO<\/li>\n<li>E-commerce<\/li>\n<li>Email<\/li>\n<li>Social Media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We then populated each list to include the company name, the URL to their blog, the title of a specific blog post (find this by searching their URL on <a href=\"http:\/\/buzzsumo.com\/\">BuzzSumo<\/a> to find their most popular content), the author\u2019s first name and last name, and finally their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stargazerdigital.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">email address<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just like this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/f01f4b47-70b8-4efd-9fa4-3a22ce7c4c97\" alt=\"spreadsheet\"><\/div>\n<p>The articles included in the spreadsheet were actual blog posts on the various influencers&#8217; websites that could be used to make an infographic. We didn\u2019t want to suggest producing an original article and infographic since that would be extra and unneeded work.<\/p>\n<p>You can use sub-articles to create your own infographic, too, which is a great way to repurpose content and save time. When you save an influencers\u2019 time, you\u2019ve won.<\/p>\n<p>Recommending an article that can be transformed into an infographic not only eliminates added communication time between both parties, but it makes the author\u2019s job a lot easier. As a result, they are more inclined to agree to your <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/business-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">business proposal<\/a> because they don\u2019t really need to do anything.<\/p>\n<p><b>But what if I want to research contacts for multiple different niches?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Good question!<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say that in addition to running a marketing blog, I also have another blog where I write about food and my experiences cooking gourmet meals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/50380b83-eed8-4241-8501-ee1994adc592\" alt=\"niche\"><\/div>\n<p>But wait! So simply select all your columns, scroll up to the top toolbar and choose&nbsp;<b>\u201cData\u201d<\/b>. After that, select <b>\u201cSort Range\u201d<\/b> and pick the column where your <b>\u201cNiche\u201d<\/b> header is situated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/d3670381-0ab3-4d51-bed7-818c26697f7f\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<p>At last, you will have all of your categories organized neatly so you can keep adding away to your spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/ab005333-0493-439b-8dc2-1c7030ea9ab5\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><b>Okay, so where do I find these magical contacts?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re lucky enough to have some disposable income, I\u2019d recommend investing in a tool like <a href=\"http:\/\/buzzsumo.com\/\">Buzzsumo<\/a> (there\u2019s a free version, too), <a href=\"http:\/\/moz.com\/\">Moz<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/\">Mention<\/a>. They all help you track down influencers from different areas.<\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s assume that you have no money, or you don\u2019t want to spend it. Luckily, there\u2019s a handy little chrome extension called <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/scraper\/mbigbapnjcgaffohmbkdlecaccepngjd?hl=en\">Google Scraper<\/a> that can do some of the work for you. Because let\u2019s be real &#8211; you don\u2019t want to research potential leads manually. If you&#8217;re looking to build your email list or gather contact information from Instagram, consider using an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inbeat.co\/articles\/instagram-email-scraper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram email scraper<\/a> tool to streamline the process even further.<\/p>\n<p>First, hop on to Google for some keyword research. Type in a keyword that relates to the niche you are researching for.<\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/7abaf891-7cc8-4f67-9e12-a2d46126b8f0\" alt=\"google search\"><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019m going to search for the keyword <i><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.thisisnadya.com\/\">Toronto Secret Restaurants<\/a><\/i> because it is most relevant to what I write about on my food blog.<\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/e0d4a057-f7e3-45a9-8f8b-f9ffe54e7b48\" alt=\"best kept secret toronto\"><\/div>\n<p>Use the scrape extension to export the results so that you can refer back to them later.&nbsp;<b>Repeat this for each of the niches you plan on reaching out to<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>In no time, you will have a well-populated list of potential marketers, journalists and bloggers to collaborate with.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Prepare the Perfect Pitch<\/h2>\n<p>Once all of your preliminary research is complete, and you\u2019ve compiled a solid list of contacts to outreach to, <b>you need to prepare the ultimate email pitch<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have a good pitch it won\u2019t get accepted. If it doesn\u2019t get accepted, this is all for nought. So lean in and take notes, because I\u2019m going to teach you exactly how to create the perfect pitch.All it really takes to get positive results is to follow this 5-step breakdown:<\/p>\n<h3>The Subject Line<\/h3>\n<p>When you\u2019re writing your subject line, remember that the emails that get opened most tend to appeal to utility and to curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>How is this email going to provide any practical value to the person opening it, and is there an interesting story?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go back to my <i>secret restaurant<\/i> concept. I recently began pitching a lot of journalists and newspapers in Toronto in hopes of promoting this new project. Of the 10 reporters I pitched, 9 got back to me.<\/p>\n<p>In case math isn\u2019t your jam, that\u2019s a 90% response rate. Not too shabby!<\/p>\n<p>The subject line of my pitch was simply: <i><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.thisisnadya.com\/a-restaurant-that-doesnt-accept-cash-and-is-only-open-one-day-a-week\/\">A restaurant that doesn\u2019t accept cash and is only open once a week<\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/6be8686e-eb28-40af-ba3c-8876c809b67a\" alt=\"sample email\"><\/div>\n<p>Which brings me to my next point:<\/p>\n<p><b>Subject lines that are direct, straightforward and not too \u201csalesy\u201d, perform best<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/mailchimp.com\/resources\/research\/email-marketing-subject-line-comparison\/\">analysis conducted by MailChimp<\/a>, the real secret behind writing the perfect subject line is to simply describe the subject of your email.<\/p>\n<p>Shocking, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve nailed down your subject line, move onto the opener.<\/p>\n<h3>The Opener<\/h3>\n<p>Once your email has been opened, it\u2019s all smooth sailing, right?<\/p>\n<p>WRONG! You\u2019re not done yet. The opening sentence, or the introduction of your email is the first impression you give the recipient.<\/p>\n<p><b>If the subject line is your Tinder profile, then the opener is the first date. It can make or break whether a relationship ensues<\/b>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/ca4ed2de-390e-443d-b938-5cd5359e10c9\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<p>Just like a first date, you want to appear genuine. Start with a friendly greeting, and don\u2019t be afraid to show some of your personality.<\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/c51b447a-7945-49bc-9bdc-162ed981fbfe\" alt=\"so nice email\"><\/div>\n<h3>The Presentation<\/h3>\n<p>The presentation is the point in your email where you &#8211; surprise! &#8211; <i>present<\/i> the meat of your pitch.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of Venngage, we were presenting the idea of making an infographic based off of a specific blog post we found on the influencer\u2019s site.<\/p>\n<p><b>It\u2019s important to show how your suggestion benefits the individual you are reaching out to<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niu.edu\/user\/tj0bjs1\/papers\/kesb09.pdf\">personality study<\/a> conducted by Northern Illinois University, using the word because can have powerful effects on human psychology. In fact, the simple addition of the word boosted the likeliness of compliance by 45%! It forces you to give the person a reason to accept your request.<\/p>\n<p>SO:<\/p>\n<p>Rather than just saying, <b>\u201cI want to create an infographic for you based on this blog post,\u201d<\/b> try saying, <b>\u201cI want to create an infographic for you based on this blog post, BECAUSE it will provide you with some great visual content to share with your readers!\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/f5136be7-a7dd-45e5-ad0b-8ec23ecd42f2\" alt=\"reason\"><\/div>\n<p>#nailedit.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it. You don\u2019t need to elaborate too much, just one or two sentences that get straight to the point.<\/p>\n<p>Then, onto the important part:<\/p>\n<h3>The Ask<\/h3>\n<p>This is the part in the email where you ask the influencer to return the favor.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s beneficial to include in your initial email since it eliminates the need to keep communicating back and forth, but I prefer sending the ask in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uplead.com\/follow-up-email\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">follow-up email<\/a> (once the influencer has committed to collaborating with you).<\/p>\n<p>After all, they say \u201cthe fortune is in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uplead.com\/follow-up-email\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">follow up<\/a>\u201d for a reason.<\/p>\n<p>This is a simple, single-sentence like, \u201cWould you be willing to include the infographic we create in the original blog post?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the exact pitch I emailed to Sujan Patel when I offered to create an infographic for him:<\/p>\n<div class=\"storycenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sumome-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/storyimages\/0d22e0d7-2ec3-45e8-a922-65209e286d6b\" alt=\"the ask\"><\/div>\n<p>Notice that I didn\u2019t ask for anything upfront.<\/p>\n<p>Wait until you finally create the infographic and send it their way (with your own embed code) to ask for attribution. 99.9% of the time, the person you are communicating with will have absolutely no qualms with crediting you and your work.<\/p>\n<p><i>That being said, there is always that 0.1% who are just dicks.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Once the influencer has agreed to attribution, you can then push them in later emails to share the content with their user base.<\/p>\n<p>Ask them to also include the embed code under the infographic so that others can put the infographic on their own blogs!<\/p>\n<h3>The Sign-Off<\/h3>\n<p>When you\u2019re creating the perfect pitch, the sign off is important.<\/p>\n<p>Some think that adding a sign-off that is too suggestive will hinder your chances at getting a response. This depends on the language you use.<\/p>\n<p>In Edward Deci\u2019s book, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/deci.socialpsychology.org\/publications\">Why We Do What We Do<\/a><\/i>, he states that inherent motivation lies in giving a person a sense of autonomy. Using words like <i>you should,<\/i> or <i>you need to<\/i> or anything that implies necessity and lack of choice, diminishes a person\u2019s willingness to comply.<\/p>\n<p>So in your sign-off, acknowledge your excitement to hear back from them at their own convenience. That way you are not coming off as pushy, but you are still demonstrating your willingness to get moving.<\/p>\n<p>Some people suggest adding a calendar with available times to chat on the phone in case they are seeking more information. Although this can works, it might come off as demanding and overly salesy.<\/p>\n<p>Wouldn\u2019t you be more compelled to respond to someone who is excited to work with you, than someone who implies their entitlement to work with you?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what I thought.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, now that you\u2019ve created the perfect pitch, you can move onto the next step&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Step 3:&nbsp;Use Buzzstream to send pitches<\/h2>\n<p>At last you can finally&nbsp;<em>send<\/em> your pitches to influencers (they&#8217;ve got to see your request somehow, right?)<\/p>\n<p>In order to do this in the most effective way possible, I highly recommend that you use <a href=\"http:\/\/buzzstream.com\">Buzzstream<\/a>. There are two primary features of Buzzstream. The first is the &#8220;Discovery&#8221; feature and the second is the &#8220;Outreach&#8221; feature.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10399\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-23-at-5.07.07-PM.png\" alt=\"buzzstream\" width=\"295\" height=\"188\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Discovery:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The discovery feature is probably one of the most useful tools you&#8217;ll ever encounter. It allows you to type in specific keywords or phrases and then scours the database for all the influencers that fall into that category.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s say you&#8217;re trying to find influencers in the &#8220;Content Marketing&#8221; space. And you know what else? A lot of these influencers you end up making connections with have their own following of individuals who syndicate content.
