Creating a timeline manually in Microsoft Word can take approximately 30 minutes, whereas using SmartArt graphics reduces this time to about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrawmax.com\/timeline\/how-to-create-a-timeline-in-word\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 minutes<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s break down the steps with each process and check out the finished product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#manual\">Create timeline in Microsoft Word manually<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#smartart\">Create timeline in Microsoft Word using SmartArt<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"manual\">Create timeline in Microsoft Word manually<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I said, timeline creation manually in Microsoft Word by drawing a series of shapes and text blocks and then inserting icons will take considerably longer, but you will get a more custom and tweakable end result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the timeline template I&#8217;m going to create for Word (inspired by a <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/infographics\/pandemic-refugee-crisis-timeline-infographic-62150908-5325-4a88-aae8-0e807a8b6656\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venngage template<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-46597\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/COVID-timeline-manual.jpg\" alt=\"timeline template word\" class=\"wp-image-46597\" width=\"700\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 1: Add title<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Type and style the headline. Go to&nbsp;&#8220;Insert&#8221; and add rectangle shapes. In this case, I chose to alternate above and below the line because that&#8217;s what was in the original I was emulating. The biggest benefit of this is you can basically have twice the amount of content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The default in Word is blue boxes with black borders, while text boxes default to white with black borders. Under &#8220;Insert&#8221; &gt; &#8220;Icon&#8221;, find the best option for each entry. Adjust everything to get the ideal alignment.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-46832\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Word-timeline-step-6.jpg\" alt=\"Step 6: Add connecting lines and circles\" class=\"wp-image-46832\" width=\"700\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finished product: Not too bad, but very time-consuming<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It took quite a bit of fussing and manual adjustments, but the finished product is pretty close to the <a href=\"#template\">inspiration design<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-46597\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/COVID-timeline-manual.jpg\" alt=\"timeline template word\" class=\"wp-image-46597\" width=\"700\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"smartart\">Create timeline in Microsoft Word using SmartArt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Word offers a pair of timelines in its stock SmartArt gallery, and the creation process for SmartArt timelines is considerably shorter than for custom-made ones. Microsoft Word offers two <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/create-a-timeline-9c4448a9-99c7-4b0e-8eff-0dcf535f223c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">timeline-specific SmartArt graphics<\/a>: Basic Timeline and Circle Accent Timeline.&nbsp;But the result leaves quite a bit to be desired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 1: Insert the title<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the same first step as in the manual example. Type and style your title as you wish.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-46831\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Word-timeline-step-1.jpg\" alt=\"Step 1: Insert the title\" class=\"wp-image-46831\" width=\"700\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 2: Insert SmartArt timeline<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Go to &#8220;Insert&#8221; &gt; &#8220;SmartArt&#8221; and choose from the gallery of available options, which is relatively limited for timelines. There are only two graphics made for timelines, though there are some other SmartArt graphics that would probably work, too.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-46839\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Word_sa-timeline-step-2.jpg\" alt=\"Step 2: Insert SmartArt timeline\" class=\"wp-image-46839\" width=\"700\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Write the text<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At the top left of the SmartArt tab, pull up the text pane and write all of your bullet points. You&#8217;ll need to change how they are aligned by bringing them in front of the text under the graphics format menu. Change the color there, too.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-46835\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"726\" height=\"498\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Word_sa-timeline-step-6.jpg\" alt=\"timeline template word\" class=\"wp-image-46835\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In addition to not having a huge supply of icon options, having to do so many manual adjustments made this SmartArt graphic not quite smart enough for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finished product:&nbsp;Hard to read<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The final result is hard to read because the text automatically adjusted to make room for each entry.
