I have had no formal design training but after consistent back and forth with the design team at Venngage, I now know what good and bad design looks like. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>And one of the easiest ways to make or break your fake design cred is with a color scheme! <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here I will show you how to do that&#8230;in less than 10 minutes. But starting without a plan will end up costing you more time than it saves you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where many people, including myself, first run into a problem and end up having to redo many visualizations. So save yourself the trouble and create a simple plan, or list, of charts or visualizations you want to use while you are writing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here is what I do:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read through your content and find places that would be better explained in a visualization. For example, in this chart, I was comparing millions of dollars spent in college football in many charts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, decide what types of charts or graphs would get your point across the best. In this case, I used a bubble chart to help explain the magnitude between the groups. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/df674550-898a-4bb3-a17a-4a9289e10111-3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7605 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/df674550-898a-4bb3-a17a-4a9289e10111-3.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"386\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, determine how many pieces of data each chart needs to be illustrated in each of the visualizations. There are four different groups we illustrated throughout the article. So we knew that there would only be a maximum of four different colors used.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing that you need a certain number of colors, pick a color scheme! This can be done with any of the tips we explain in this article.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now visualize it!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Those steps\u00a0will give you a great place to start when picking colors schemes, instead of making it up while you go. Which, again, I am guilty of doing in the past!<\/p>\n<p><b>There is a big difference in approach between needing seven distinct colors for a pie chart or only one for a line graph. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like so:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/f95888f1-8c79-4751-846b-d321369e8988.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7606 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/f95888f1-8c79-4751-846b-d321369e8988.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"455\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have often wasted a ton of time reworking a color scheme because it doesn\u2019t fit with the article. By creating a simple plan beforehand, like the one above, there will be less confusion about the number of colors you will need. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/offers.hubspot.com\/infographic-design?utm_source=hscm-Venngage-20170228-infographic-design-blg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Want to take your infographic design to the next level? Download our interactive guide on The Dos and Don&#8217;ts of Infographic design!<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><em>Do Not<\/em> Use Bland Colors<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start by taking a look at the graph below. Aside from it being completely misleading, it is lacking the color needed to help readers understand it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The graph below involves political parties, which should have made color selection almost a no brainer. Republicans are red and Democrats are blue. Yet, the choice above highlights the most boring color in the entire color wheel, gray.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/2.1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7607 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/2.1.jpg\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"375\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.statisticshowto.com\/misleading-graphs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is another example of a chart that is LITERALLY about colors. But the designers, like real designers, decided that black would be a better way to convey their data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/2.2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7608 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/2.2.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"575\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dsq-sds.org\/article\/view\/1676\/1595\">Source<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Color me unimpressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not be like these designers. There are literally millions of colors that can be used. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Actually, there are 16,777,216 colors that could have been used, all of which are available in Venngage&#8217;s color too. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-05-at-2.42.36-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7609 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-05-at-2.42.36-PM.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"2068\" height=\"1052\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean, gray and black are technically not even colors. They are shades, making them the worst choice to portray differentiation in your data visualizations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Visualizations are used to help people understand complex data.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And these have both failed that simple test. But with a little splash of color they could be much more usable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><em>Do<\/em>\u00a0Use Brand Colors<\/h2>\n<p>This is one of the easiest but often most overlooked ideas, especially for beginners.<\/p>\n<p><b>You already have a battle-tested brand color scheme. Why not use it? <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Venngage\u2019s main brand color is a bright blue, which you can see in the pie chart below. And we used some of the tools I mention at the end of this article\u00a0to find two other colors that matched it perfectly.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/84b86a37-ba79-4294-a0aa-b2fa3d1fe333-4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7610 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/84b86a37-ba79-4294-a0aa-b2fa3d1fe333-4.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"550\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is another example from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L2Inc in a graphic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about Snapchat,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using their signature yellow:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/social-platforms-2015-report-card-snapchat.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7611 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/social-platforms-2015-report-card-snapchat.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"616\" height=\"414\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And here is one more using my alma mater\u2019s shade of red in an article about college football:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/6fb75103-db4f-4cb5-ab51-d61be9ea7b2d-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7613 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/6fb75103-db4f-4cb5-ab51-d61be9ea7b2d-1.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"585\" height=\"358\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you are not using your brand\u2019s colors in a visualization, it is a great place to start when choosing a color scheme. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>With Venngage&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/my-brand-kit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My Brand Kit<\/a> you only have to\u00a0enter your brand colors ONCE.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Brand-Color-example.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7614\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Brand-Color-example.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"1446\" height=\"1042\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are then saved in the tool and then you can use them for every chart, visualization or infographic you make. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So no more searching for or bothering the designers for the hex code of the colors your brand uses!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><em>Do Not<\/em>\u00a0Let Colors Distract From The Data<\/h2>\n<p>To repeat myself: the ultimate goal of a visualization is to make complex data easier to comprehend.<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/><\/b><b>Readers should be able to glance at a data visualization and understand it in a few seconds. If your design or color choice inhibits this, you need to change it.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Here is an example in which I used too many colors, thus distracting from the point I wanted to make.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/f410b6ff-5346-4f1f-9f86-8db104a2f3fb.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7615 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/f410b6ff-5346-4f1f-9f86-8db104a2f3fb.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"489\" height=\"389\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of using seven very distinct colors, I could have easily taken a different approach entirely. Even using a bland color like gray would look better than what I did above. Because it would put the focus on the blue section of the graph, which as you can see from the title was the main focal point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>This is not the place to show off the newest and greatest trends in design. It is the place to help your readers understand your data or story better.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the next section, I will show you exactly what I should have done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH: Everything you need to know about COLORS&#8230; in under 3 minutes!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XJ74pxrhcQc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><em>Do<\/em> Use Tints, Tones, and Shades<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of my favorite color hacks, and I only started using recently. It\u2019s very simple to use across different types of visualizations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First you need a color to start with: in this case, I selected a light blue with the hex code of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #93bedf;\">#93BEDF<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then all you have to do is plug that hex code into one of the thousands of color tools and it will give you a great spectrum. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me show you&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice how this tool provides you with 20 unique colors you can use:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-27-at-6.24.01-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7616 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-27-at-6.24.01-PM.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"454\" height=\"626\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seriously it is that simple! And because of that simplicity, it has become my favorite color hack and I will continue to use it in many projects to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is an example of it used in a bubble chart:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/d5f91c35-2976-465f-bf21-026e78baacf5-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7618 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/d5f91c35-2976-465f-bf21-026e78baacf5-2.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"537\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pie chart:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/603b7953-5176-4b60-bec0-b5d0e411c8db-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7617 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/603b7953-5176-4b60-bec0-b5d0e411c8db-1.png\" alt=\"603b7953-5176-4b60-bec0-b5d0e411c8db (1)\" width=\"539\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even a bar chart:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/dbdf6b5d-7be1-4840-adde-721a51024a41.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7619 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/dbdf6b5d-7be1-4840-adde-721a51024a41.png\" alt=\"dbdf6b5d-7be1-4840-adde-721a51024a41\" width=\"549\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have not noticed yet, blue is my favorite color to work with. Mainly because it looks clean and professional on a white background. And it is used by many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">businesses to evoke a feeling of trust and stability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can find some colors that you love working with and memorize what they look great with, you will save yourself a few headaches. And more importantly, you will save time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><em>Do<\/em> Keep It Consistent<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is another concept I struggled with in the beginning of my pseudo-design career. I really believed that each chart or visualization needed to be\u00a0unique and in turn put that before usefulness. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>But consistency over uniqueness in design is the best plan of action when making a visualization.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are all the visualizations I used in one of my article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Twitter-All.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7620 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Twitter-All.jpg\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"557\" height=\"553\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By my count, there are all of three colors used throughout the entire article. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And only three were used in this graphic, keeping the labels consistent throughout as well:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-27-at-7.54.10-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7621 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-27-at-7.54.10-PM.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"594\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>When you are keeping it consistent you can also keep it simple. Which as a non-designer, you should want at all costs!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figuring out how I can keep it dead simple is how I approach every visualization now. It is literally dead simple to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><em>Do Not<\/em> Avoid The Color Wheel<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The color wheel is your friend when it comes making a compelling scheme. You also can establish a stance on a problem without saying it outright.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, look at the chart below depicting real Twitter accounts versus accounts that are probably fake. I used blue, which signifies trust, to represent the real accounts and and red, which is usually a negative color, to represent the questionable accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/9be82c21-719d-43bb-bf1f-f66a0d50f836.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7628 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/9be82c21-719d-43bb-bf1f-f66a0d50f836.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"445\" height=\"435\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I had picked a different color scheme, I don&#8217;t believe the point would have been so easy for readers to understand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>And what are visualizations all about? Making data easier to understand! <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to subtly use color is to signify different groups is based on their branding\u00a0colors. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/verdantlabs.com\/politics_of_professions\/\">this award-winning infographic<\/a>\u00a0splits the political parties based on their colors. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The designer made it very easy to quickly compare and get the point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/909c712c-bf67-46bf-9535-93a7da2fd3c0.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7630 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/909c712c-bf67-46bf-9535-93a7da2fd3c0.png\" alt=\"The Do's And Don'ts of Color Selection\" width=\"419\" height=\"546\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And let\u2019s not forget about the importance of color fitting the content.
