Even if you are a marketer like me, there are some things you start to pick up on. And a few of those things start to drive you crazy after a while.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And one of those design thorns in my side is\u2026 <\/span><b>bad icon usage.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may sound like a little thing that really doesn&#8217;t matter for infographics&#8230; but it does! Icons are an important <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/infographic-elements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">element of a good infographic<\/a>. You don&#8217;t want to use bad icons and have someone look at your infographic and notice your poor design choices&#8230; it puts the whole integrity of the infographic in jeopardy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of reading your great information, readers are focused on out-of-place icons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it is tough to pick the right icon, even if you are a designer by profession. Which I am not, so it is doubly hard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>But fear not. When in doubt, use labels<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a tip that I am going to repurpose directly from the web design community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During my research, I found that designers state repeatedly that the best way to make sure an icon is useful is to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/uxmyths.com\/post\/715009009\/myth-icons-enhance-usability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use a label or text with it.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And that thinking can be applied directly to an infographic as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Using labels for icons is a necessity when <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/infographic-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designing an infographic<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine if you saw the infographic on the left below. Would you be able figure out what it was talking about in a few seconds? Probably not, but I don\u2019t blame you, because it is poorly designed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/infographics\/should-and-shouldnt-hr-comparison-7b8222e3-ba48-487b-a2ef-931cff4e4294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7908\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/98088723-93d4-46e6-b80b-6048ca7703e2.png\" alt=\"infographic icons\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<center><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/infographics\/should-and-shouldnt-hr-comparison-7b8222e3-ba48-487b-a2ef-931cff4e4294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/><button class=\"btn-cta\">USE THIS INFOGRAPHIC TEMPLATE<\/button><\/a><\/center>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the infographic on the right is perfectly clear in a few seconds. All because the icons and text work together to paint a complete picture. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The icons should be used to give some context but the labels will always hammer the point home. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is another example of the need for labels alongside icons. In this case, it looks just as bad as the previous example without any labels or text. The context is established in literal seconds and the reader knows exactly what each section is about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think this is where a lot of people can miss the point when designing an infographic. They try to use icons too liberally and forget to include labels or text. And they both should be used to help the reader understand the information. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Just remember that icons should give context and the labels clarify that context!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you stick to that simple mantra you will be fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2><strong>2. Give icons backgrounds<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are looking for an easy way to make a <a href=\"https:\/\/highspark.co\/free-presentation-icons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">batch of icons<\/a> look spectacular I recommend using a background shape. It can be any shape really, but you cannot go wrong with a simple circle and square background. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may seem like a small design choice that was up to the designer but it is very important. This is extremely important if you are using icons as anchors or headers for the text near them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, your icons and text look like they\u2019re floating in a void, like in the infographic on the left. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using different background colors for your icons, like in the example above, you can quickly establish that each point is different from the others. Well, with my limited design acumen, I have created a few examples, below that you can use right now:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/f520573b-eb56-466a-9f36-42c0f3967227-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7912\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/f520573b-eb56-466a-9f36-42c0f3967227-2.png\" alt=\"6 Ways To Use Icons In Infographic Design\" width=\"650\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2><strong>3. Pair up icons and text<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pairing icons is like pairing wines, it takes some time before you really know what you are doing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picking icons to use throughout your infographic is another place that non-designers&#8211;like me&#8211;can run into a little trouble. And those troubles are exacerbated by the fact that there are no specific rules put in place by the Design Police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that does not mean it is impossible to do, as long as you remember to keep things consistent! If you use the same general style of icons you will be fine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When it comes to icons, great pairings can be achieved just by keeping the style consistent throughout. It is really that simple. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, take a look at the infographics below, wherein I swapped some of the icons:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=3a58df62-d9bb-4cb3-bbf6-bd9aab6eacd0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7968\" style=\"border: 2px solid #ddd;\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2016\/10\/b07c0245-33e2-4e80-8074-a28479a11da5.png\" alt=\"infographic icons\" width=\"650\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<center><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=3a58df62-d9bb-4cb3-bbf6-bd9aab6eacd0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/><button class=\"btn-cta\">USE THIS TEMPLATE<\/button><\/a><\/center>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The infographic on the right conveys a certain feel of\u00a0professionalism because all of the icons are a consistent style.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the icons in the first point in the infographic on the left look incredibly out of place compared to icons in the other points, and the infographic as a whole. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Instead of focusing on your content, readers get stuck looking at your odd icon choice. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take another look at this infographic:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/23404505-7b3a-4343-9774-402352474122-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7914 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/23404505-7b3a-4343-9774-402352474122-2.png\" alt=\"infographic icons\" width=\"650\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one on the left just looks like a mismatched mess, but the other one looks like everything fits together well!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And here is an example of how poor icon matching ultimately distracts from the content of your infographic:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=9df7ba94-a2b1-4e15-800d-04a2b1e26f0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7916\" style=\"border: 2px solid #ddd;\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/366a1107-449b-414b-9058-0a152cf3d2b0-copy.png\" alt=\"infographic icons\" width=\"650\" height=\"361\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<center><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=9df7ba94-a2b1-4e15-800d-04a2b1e26f0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/><button class=\"btn-cta\">USE THIS TEMPLATE<\/button><\/a><\/center>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your eyes are drawn directly to the mismatched icons, instead of the budget numbers above them. Which I am guessing is the most important part of this infographic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Icons in infographics should always add to the content, not detract or distract. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is another mantra that will help you create useful and beautiful infographics! <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bad text and icon pairing can distract from the content of your infographic just like bad icon pairing can.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, look at the two versions of the infographic below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=253a6590-426d-457a-ac84-f2f86217ec38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7917\" style=\"border: 2px solid #ddd;\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/028d73c7-6a5e-42ee-b440-78998afb9889.png\" alt=\"infographic icons\" width=\"650\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<center><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=253a6590-426d-457a-ac84-f2f86217ec38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/><button class=\"btn-cta\">USE THIS TEMPLATE<\/button><\/a><\/center>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Twitter icon is used to grab the attention of the reader. And when icons are used in headers, they should be large and anchor the important text. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the version of the infographic on the left, the Twitter icon is small, does not fit the bold style of the infographic, and gets lost in the white background. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But check this out: if you stretch the red background in the header to behind the icon then the icon looks fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=253a6590-426d-457a-ac84-f2f86217ec38\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7918\" style=\"border: 2px solid #ddd;\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/7a6bbc0d-e2d3-43d1-abef-74647ab9fd11.png\" alt=\"6 Ways To Use Icons In Infographic Design\" width=\"650\" height=\"449\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Icons are also great for illustrating concepts. Create order and organization with icons<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you probably saw in some of the examples above, icons can be used to establish order and move readers through an infographic. They can be used to break down sections, highlight, important details or anchor header text <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If you were to look at a new infographic your eyes are most likely drawn to a few strong icons. Especially when those icons are situated in an ocean of text. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you can use this to create a simple path through every infographic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, take a look at both versions of this infographic:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=3d02b583-6850-4082-8b37-61734f44f856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7919\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/b0ad7ac9-04d7-4a0b-83e1-0831dd32cea5.png\" alt=\"infographic icons\" width=\"650\" height=\"677\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<center><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=3d02b583-6850-4082-8b37-61734f44f856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/><button class=\"btn-cta\">USE THIS TEMPLATE<\/button><\/a><\/center>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The version on the left looks like an oversized document, which is not the goal of an infographic. Without the icons there is no order in the text blocks at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or even a way to quickly see they are in fact different points without reading each. Plus there is a ton of wasted space with just the text boxes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put it simply, without icons, there is nothing to pull readers\u2019 eyes down the page. They will stop reading it very quickly if that&#8217;s the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one on the right not only feels balanced with the icons it also helps frame the content. The icons quickly establish the hierarchy in this infographic and show that each text box is a separate point. Users can easily see that blocks with scales icons discuss comparing or contrasting ideas, while <a href=\"https:\/\/icons8.com\/icons\/set\/search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">search plus icons<\/a> symbolize looking at something in more detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally the background embellishments, which we talked about above, help break the content down further and establish some order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>With just icons, you can establish a hierarchy of information and give readers information without having to explicitly state it.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is another example of icons being used to establish order: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=614473be-4ddc-47ac-bc5f-91687cfcb0e6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7920\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/32493a33-50fa-45a8-829a-5eabe0b6d383-3.png\" alt=\"6 Ways To Use Icons In Infographic Design\" width=\"650\" height=\"414\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<center><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=614473be-4ddc-47ac-bc5f-91687cfcb0e6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/><button class=\"btn-cta\">USE THIS TEMPLATE<\/button><\/a><\/center>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The infographic on the right uses the same icon in different shades of brown to organize the drinks in descending order, according to coffee strength. This infographic is Central Perk worthy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the version on the left looks like a menu from the most generic coffee shop in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don&#8217;t be generic, be iconic, my friends.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2><strong>5. Use color sparingly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have talked briefly about icon color selection, but now let\u2019s take a deeper look. Although some of this stuff should be common knowledge, sometimes it will slip your mind. I know it has happened to me a few times and going back to fix it is always a pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Remember: icons should be eye-catching but not distracting. The colors you choose should follow the same principle. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have already written a full breakdown of how to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/infographic-design-the-dos-and-donts-of-color-selection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use colors in infographics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So I will skip that part and just cover these two tips for icons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure colors fit your theme &amp; brand<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the color wheel to select colors<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need a more in-depth explanation about those tips, check out the full article! It does not matter if they are your favorite colors, it does not fit the theme at all! The colors distract from the point that is trying to be made in the text below it. Plus it looks pretty unprofessional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now let\u2019s move on to using the color wheel. I know you probably have not thought about the color wheel since elementary school but it is still useful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three simple ways to match colors, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/infographic-design-the-dos-and-donts-of-color-selection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which I covered here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, just by using the color wheel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below we used a complementary color match for the background yellow (#FFE536) and the blue icons (#1900B2).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/8656ea04-8490-46f8-8030-013172824a8e.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7922\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/8656ea04-8490-46f8-8030-013172824a8e.png\" alt=\"6 Ways To Use Icons In Infographic Design\" width=\"650\" height=\"609\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>This type of color matching can be used if you want to give the icons some more pop while still fitting the overall theme.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that subtle color change, the icons are useful without being overwhelming. Which is exactly what they are perfect for on infographics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when it comes to using the color wheel, there are an endless number combinations you can use! Just play around with it until you find something that fits. I recommend using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/color.adobe.com\/create\/color-wheel\/?base=2&amp;rule=Analogous&amp;selected=0&amp;name=My%20Color%20Theme&amp;mode=rgb&amp;rgbvalues=0.7903975335372225,1,0.16176470588235292,0.91,0.888224682446379,0.14720588235294116,1,0.8980392156860543,0.21176470588235297,0.91,0.7344355458236076,0.14720588235294116,1,0.7225725027612551,0.16176470588235292&amp;swatchOrder=0,1,2,3,4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adobe Color tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2><strong>6. Size icons correctly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, we are going to talk about the correct sizing of icons! And just like with colors, the size should make icons noticeable without being distracting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like when it comes to matching fonts, it will take a bit of practice before you are a pro!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look at an example of bad icon sizing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I really want you to focus on what is wrong with the version of the infographic one on the left. Because I REALLY messed it up to make a point about the importance of icon sizing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/70886564-67c8-4028-9bdb-48aaf83083e8.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7923\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/10\/70886564-67c8-4028-9bdb-48aaf83083e8.png\" alt=\"6 Ways To Use Icons In Infographic Design\" width=\"650\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first row you can see how to not use icons with headers. The icon in the column on the far right is proportionate to the text, but the icons in the other columns do not fit the space given or the text. Not to mention, the lack of consistency in icons size makes the whole infographic feel off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, take a look at the second and third rows to get a lesson on using space. The icons in the second and third column are severely undersized, and that makes them almost unnecessary.
