I\u2019d start by putting together an outline overview with three of those four essential elements: dates, headers, and brief descriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Find simple visuals<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then I\u2019d find a simple visual, like an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/infographic-design-6-ways-to-use-icons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">icon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to accompany each point. These visuals are what sets a timeline infographic apart from a plain old timeline. They draw the reader\u2019s eye, add visual interest, and make the graphic easy to scan, without too much thought.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t have your own visuals ready to go, you can find some right in the Venngage editor. Let\u2019s review the strengths and weaknesses of each type of timeline layout.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Vertical timeline infographic layout<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vertical layout is by far the most popular layout for timeline infographics. It comes in two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/design-dictionary\/alignment-design-principle-definition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alignments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <strong>centered and left-aligned. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Centered vertical timelines<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centered <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/vertical-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vertical timeline<\/a> is my personal favorite. Most people will automatically recognize it as a timeline without studying it for more than a second.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also quite flexible; there\u2019s plenty of room for long descriptions, and to add more points, you can simply extend the length of the page. Plus, it\u2019s easy to add visuals to this type of layout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Use a centered vertical layout when you have many points with a mixture of text and images.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, this product roadmap timeline is a great example of a layout with all the key stages mapped out vertically, from concept to completion. Instead of having branches come off of either side of the timeline, the line itself is aligned to the left of the page, and all of the content is placed to the right of the line.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re ideal for those looking to present complex information hierarchically or as a series of steps.
