Are they inspiring? Spontaneous and unconventional? Strict and scary?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers can make an long-lasting impression on us for a variety of reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After reading up on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/23265507.2017.1339572\" target=\"\u201c_blank\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnofollow\u201d noopener\">the common personality traits of teachers<\/a>, combing through lists of famous teachers in pop culture, and drawing on my own personal experience as a teaching assistant, I created the teacher personality spectrum:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/08\/image7.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18928\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/08\/image7.png\" alt=\"teacher personality spectrum\" width=\"650\" height=\"650\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, certain personality types are extremes of one personality trait, while others fall more in the middle. I suppose a teacher who intersected in the centre of the spectrum would be some kind of super teacher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, of course you can\u2019t really boil a whole group of people down into six categories (you shouldn\u2019t be boiling people at all, by the way&#8230;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But like characters on TV, these personality types are exaggerations of real life. You may fall somewhere in between two teacher personality types on the spectrum.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So take these personality descriptions with a grain of salt!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>The Sergeant Teacher<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your personality fall on the authoritarian side of the spectrum, you may be a Sergeant Teacher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be thinking of the stereotypical gym teacher making their students do drills. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/3orieLAJE4oTkzw0eI\" width=\"480\" height=\"362\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/season-17-the-simpsons-17x12-3orieLAJE4oTkzw0eI\" target=\"\u201c_blank\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnofollow\u201d noopener\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Sergeant teachers aren\u2019t all tyrants. They may simply want to instil in their students a value system of discipline, structure, and hard work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These teachers want to see their students reach their full potential. They genuinely want their students to succeed and are willing to invest a lot of time and energy into helping them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Parental teachers fall between passion and personability on the personality spectrum. They are passionate about teaching and are able to form trusting bonds with their students.<\/p>\n<p>This type of teacher may find the school system to be restrictive, and may be tempted to bend some of the rules when they feel it will benefit their students.<\/p>\n<p>Because they\u2019re so sympathetic, it can be easy for students to take advantage of them&#8211;that\u2019s where this teacher personality type will need to exercise their authority, even if they would rather not.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also easy for this teacher personality type to get burnt out. They just don\u2019t want to coddle their students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aloof teachers manage to strike a balance between patience and discipline. But they also aren\u2019t afraid to give their students a reality check.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beneath their sarcasm and raised eyebrows is a soft and squishy soul who wants the best for their students. Sad but true. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are also plenty of teachers out there who have lost their passion along the way. Maybe one too many students refused to listen to them. In fact, despite their withdrawn attitude, Reluctant teachers can still be very good teachers. When students are more engaged, maybe they will feel more engaged as well!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting students to brainstorm ideas with a mind map could help them think outside the box. Buddy teachers may also be inclined to take the side of their students in discussions about the school system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The obvious problem this teacher personality type poses is a potential lack of discipline in their classrooms. This teacher personality type may be reluctant to exercise authority for fear of weakening their rapport with students. They may find it difficult to step into an authority&nbsp;role, and their students\u2019 focus can suffer because of it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buddy teachers can also be prone to favoritism, since they care deeply about their rapport with their students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, when they find the right balance between structure and personability, this teacher personality type can be a great source of support and mentorship for students. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Tools for Buddy teachers<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, Buddy teachers may need to remind themselves that even though their students love them, they still need to show their authority every now and then. Many of these studies categorize teachers in several personality types.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/books\/e\/9781351511544\/chapters\/10.4324%2F9780203788202-8\" target=\"\u201c_blank\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnofollow\u201d noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study published in 1961<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by J. Andelson categorized teachers into three personality types: those who prefer their profession, those who prefer their students, and those who prefer their institution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andelson noted pros and cons of each teacher personality. Those who value their profession have an \u201coutstanding professional knowledge\u201d and are able to enthusiastically teach their students in a \u201ccharismatic\u201d but \u201cnarcissistic\u201d way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, those who prefer their students encourage their pupils to develop their potential, with \u201caltruism\u201d and \u201cdedication to teaching\u201d. But it\u2019s also easy for this personality type to get burnt out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/l0Exk9ylAxvUKgqRy\" width=\"480\" height=\"226\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/snl-saturday-night-live-snow-day-l0Exk9ylAxvUKgqRy\" target=\"\u201c_blank\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnofollow\u201d noopener\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, those who prefer their institution enthusiastically teach a particular value system to their students, but this can \u201cdiminish spontaneity in students\u201d and limit their independent judgement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/1961-02808-000\" target=\"\u201c_blank\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnofollow\u201d noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study published in 1960<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by D. G. Ryans made the distinction between different teacher personalities as well. The study classified certain teachers as being a \u201cfriendly type\u201d who are \u201cfull of understanding and warmth\u201d, while other teachers are more inclined to being \u201cdistant and cold\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study also distinguishes between teachers who show \u201cresponsible and systemic behavior\u201d and those who behave \u201cchaotically and recklessly\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16Personalities <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.16personalities.com\/articles\/do-some-personality-types-make-better-teachers\" target=\"\u201c_blank\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnofollow\u201d noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conducted their own study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asking their community to agree or disagree with the statement, \u201cYou have been called an excellent teacher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/08\/16personalities.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18955\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/08\/16personalities.png\" alt=\"16personalities\" width=\"650\" height=\"325\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.16personalities.com\/articles\/do-some-personality-types-make-better-teachers\" target=\"\u201c_blank\u201d\" rel=\"\u201cnofollow\u201d noopener\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They found that the people who agreed with the statement the most exhibited \u201cfeeling\u201d and \u201cjudging\u201d traits&#8211;people who are able to connect with students and who respect structure and discipline. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So while we can\u2019t conclusively say that one type of person makes for the best teachers, there does seem to be a need for a balance between authority and personability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is no one right way to approach teaching. Different students have different needs. Different classes require different approaches.
