But what makes a show seem appealing?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The promotional poster design might have more to do with it than you realize. From books, to snacks, to beauty products, the power is often in the packaging.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when it comes time to design an ad, or a product label, or a logo, put some thought into the font designs you use. There&#8217;s a good chance they can influence\u00a0how people perceive\u00a0your marketing content and your product.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How font psychology can influence how we perceive products<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have heard about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/disney-villains\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">color psychology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before. As a bit of a crude example: you wouldn\u2019t use Comic Sans on the poster for a hard-hitting drama, right? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>When you\u2019re creating your own promotional posters, flyers, packaging and site design, you should put some careful thought into picking the design fonts to\u00a0use. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, simply changing the font choice on this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/movie-poster-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movie poster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we made for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titanic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes for an entirely different tone:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=6abf11b0-2a42-4406-a5bb-892da2414e81\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14919\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-18.png\" alt=\"titanic movie poster\" width=\"650\" height=\"428\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates?preview=6abf11b0-2a42-4406-a5bb-892da2414e81\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<button class=\"btn-cta\">USE THIS POSTER TEMPLATE<\/button><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different fonts have been designed for different purposes. For example, designers have worked hard to develop both Serif and Sans Serif fonts for maximum readability. But many designers have also created font designs that are meant to be weird and out there, for special uses only. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when it comes to choosing the best design fonts, which should you spring for? Something more conventional, like Arial or Cambria? Or something more gaudy like Impact or Monotype Corsiva?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Different fonts have different characteristics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your font choices may influence your audience\u2019s imaginations, moods, and expectations when they view your content. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151018133903\/http:\/\/psychology.wichita.edu:80\/surl\/usabilitynews\/81\/PersonalityofFonts.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study conducted back in 2006<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Software Usability Research Laboratory (SURL) at Wichita State University looked at the personality traits that people associate with different fonts. They asked participants to rate the personality of 20 fonts using 15 adjective pairs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What they found was that while more basic font designs like Arial or Courier New were considered \u201cstable\u201d and \u201cmature\u201d, they were also considered \u201cunimaginative\u201d and \u201cconformist\u201d. Meanwhile, more \u201cyouthful\u201d and \u201ccasual\u201d fonts like Kirsten and Comic Sans were also considered \u201chappy\u201d and \u201ccuddly\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the top three fonts for each descriptive word:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-23.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14920\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-23.png\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"500\" height=\"691\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151018133903\/http:\/\/psychology.wichita.edu:80\/surl\/usabilitynews\/81\/PersonalityofFonts.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image Source <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Keep in mind that this study was done over 10 years ago and Comic Sans has since gone out of style&#8230;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/popular-font-types\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or has it?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fonts can have an unexpectedly physical response on us as well, apparently. Designer Sarah Hyndman gave a TED talk on how different fonts can influence not just our moods, but also our perception of taste and smell.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OXc-VZ4Vwbo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, rounded fonts may call upon associations we have with plump, ripe fruits that are sweet to eat. Meanwhile, jagged, angular fonts can look angry or dangerous and may give us a sense of sourness and bitterness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that research in mind, we wanted to take a look at the fonts used in promotional posters for Netflix\u2019s most popular TV shows. If we&#8217;ve mentioned any shows you don&#8217;t have access to, consider getting Netflix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban-vpn.com\/blog\/how-to-set-up-a-vpn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VPN<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Our method<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We picked 50 of Netflix\u2019s most popular TV shows and categorized the fonts based on their font types. Then, we look at the characteristics commonly associated with each font type to analyze how the font may affect our perception of the shows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You can view our data sheet <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1Wbirr3-xoArDinYlPV0UEMaCCs-abyRKvCbuHJ6ssV8\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That sheet also includes some similar fonts to the ones used in the posters, in case you want to use them to a similar effect.<\/p>\n<h3><b>How we categorized the fonts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from Serif and Sans Serif fonts, the categorization of fonts can vary from resource to resource. For our study, we decided to categorize fonts into six types:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serif<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sans Serif<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decorative<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headline<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handwritten<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many of the TV show poster fonts fell into Serif or Sans Serif, as well as another category like Headline. But certain fonts were so original that they could only be classified as Decorative or Handwritten.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Here\u2019s a quick summary of each font category:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First things first, Serif vs. Sans Serif fonts. <strong>Serifs<\/strong> are those little embellishments that make fonts feel a little more traditional and respectable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Sans Serif fonts<\/strong> are generally more minimalist and straightforward. They don\u2019t have the embellishments, though that doesn\u2019t mean they lack personality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-15.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14921\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-15.png\" alt=\"font psychology \" width=\"650\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Decorative fonts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more quirky, creative and fun. You would use these to add some flare to your design. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-26.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14922\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-26.png\" alt=\"font psychology \" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Headline fonts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are meant to grab your attention with their boldness and flare for the dramatic. They\u2019re ideal for&#8211;you guessed it&#8211;headers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-19.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14923\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-19.png\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Handwritten fonts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also pretty self-explanatory. They\u2019re fonts that look like they were written by hand, giving them a personal and sometimes fancy touch. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-11.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14924\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-11.png\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other end of the spectrum are <\/span><b>Modern fonts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with their efficient lines and the impression of being forward-thinking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-8.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14925\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-8.png\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>What Netflix can teach us about font selection<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was interesting to think about the intent behind font selection on certain TV show posters. In some cases, the fonts heavily reflected the themes of the shows&#8211;those fonts tended to be Decorative. In other cases, the fonts seemed to evoke a certain time period, like in the case of some of the Serif fonts. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-21.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14926\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-21.png\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"650\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look at how each font category were used.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Netflix posters with Serif fonts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer TV show posters used Serif fonts than Sans Serif fonts. The ones that did use Serif fonts were generally shows that tapped into nostalgia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Crown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used a font that we categorized as both Serif and Headline. Their font choice is apt when you consider that the show is a period drama that will undoubtedly speak to the nostalgia of an older audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serif fonts are often perceived as traditional and respectable, and that\u2019s a prominent theme in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Crown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-17.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14927\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-17.png\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"650\" height=\"962\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showtimes.com\/movies\/the-crown-netflix-121001\/movie-poster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image Source<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The poster for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Keepers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also uses a Serif font. Considering that the show is a documentary about the murder of a Catholic school nun, the traditional and respectable qualities of the Serif font takes on a sinister undertone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14930\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology.jpg\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"650\" height=\"962\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsugar.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image Source<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serif fonts can be used to evoke a sense of nostalgia, authority, and stability. But they can also be used to challenge tradition by evoking the understood norm and then undercutting it with the content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the poster for<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dear White People<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses a Headline, Serif font. The font complements the boldness of the show and its themes of challenging and critiquing social norms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-14.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14931\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/font-psychology-14.png\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"650\" height=\"911\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/television.wikia.com\/wiki\/Dear_White_People?file=Netflix-DWPposter.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image Source<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Netflix posters with Sans Serif fonts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of the fonts used in the sample of TV show posters were Sans Serif (52%). This makes sense, since Sans Serif fonts seem to appear more in web content these days. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While certain posters seemed to use Serif fonts deliberately to convey a sense of tradition or nostalgia, many of the Modern, Decorative and Headline fonts also happened to be Sans Serif.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s because Sans Serif fonts can be subtle, or they can be bold and attention-grabbing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Mirror<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> poster uses a custom Sans Serif font that conveys the creepy feeling of the show. The modern-looking font is cracked down the middle, suggesting there\u2019s something broken about technology. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/image32.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14932\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/image32.jpg\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"650\" height=\"888\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fontmeme.com\/black-mirror-font\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image Source<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Sans Serif fonts can also convey confidence. Take the poster for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with its bold, rounded lettering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/image30.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14933\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/image30.jpg\" alt=\"font psychology\" width=\"650\" height=\"962\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/entertainment-factor.blogspot.ca\/2017\/05\/unbreakable-kimmy-schmidt-season-3-trailers-images-posters.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image Source<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, the \u201cpersonality\u201d of a given font comes down to more than just the inclusion or exclusion of serifs.
