The history of statistical graphics reveals some graphics so breathtaking in information design and artistic beauty that it is hard to imagine how they might be reproduced today.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With research material from the <a title=\"Milestone Project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.datavis.ca\/milestones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Milestone Project<\/a> by Michael Friendly, we&#8217;ve created an infographic summarizing\u00a0the evolution of infographics and\u00a0data visualization over time. Check out the interactive version here.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><b>Pre 1700s: Birth of Maps, Measurement and Graphics<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The first ring represents a large period of time before the 1700s. The earliest forms of visualization arose from the first\u00a0maps (circa 6200BC) to more complex ones to aid in the navigation and description of physical elements.<\/p>\n<p>By the early 1600s, the fundamentals of\u00a0measuring time, distance, surveying, map making and spacial geometry\u00a0was beginning to formed and\u00a0understood. The groundwork was laid and the seeds of visualization began to germinate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1158 size-full\" title=\"evolution of infographics\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle1.png\" alt=\"evolution of infographics\" width=\"432\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle1.png 432w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle1-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b><b>1700s: Birth of Charts<\/b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>By the end of this century, most of the modern charts that we know today&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/charts\/response-times-9d53617d-f4c6-416a-96f7-e47a381d8311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">time series charts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/charts\/blue-line-858d86d0-e239-4f9c-89a7-e272ef77d9f5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">line charts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/charts\/blue-bar-chart-2de23562-c101-430d-bd70-33cd5691a6bb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bar charts<\/a> had been invented. William Playfair&#8217;s seminal work, Commercial and Political Altas, was published in 1786, introducing the world to these new visual forms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1159 size-full\" title=\"evolution of infographics\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle2.png\" alt=\"evolution of infographics\" width=\"432\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle2.png 432w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle2-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b><b>1800s: Growth of Charts and Visualization Techniques<\/b><\/b><\/h2>\n<div class=\"group_description\">\n<p>The first half of the 1800s saw an explosion in innovation&#8211;many more of the <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/how-to-choose-the-best-charts-for-your-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">modern\u00a0forms of data visualization<\/a>\u00a0were invented this period: pie charts, histograms, line graphs and time-series plots, bubble charts, contour plots, and so forth.<\/p>\n<p>Mapping also progressed into more complex representations such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/infographics\/united-states-map-1901843f-8f41-40a3-9dc7-ce17150e1542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chloropleth map<\/a> and\u00a0multi-dimensional atlases.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1160 size-full\" title=\"evolution of infographics\" src=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle3.png\" alt=\"evolution of infographics\" width=\"432\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle3.png 432w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle3-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circle3-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b><b>1850s+ Golden Age of Data Visualization<\/b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The second half of the 1800s was the golden age of data visualization. Many more innovations were introduced such as <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/charts\/area-chart--44be531e-a14c-4257-8ad5-174cd699e193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stacked area charts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/templates\/infographics\/water-consumption-a1c531d5-4a75-4998-aaf4-05f69531e488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pictograms<\/a>, 3D charts and <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/flow-chart-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flow charts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Examples like as Joseph Minard\u2019s famous 1869 graphic depicting the Russian campaign of 1812 abound.
